Pokémon Live Action Movie Announced
Pokémon Company and Legendary Pictures have announced that a live action film based on Detective Pikachu. This announcement comes alongside Legendary Pictures acquiring the film rights to the Pokémon, with production of the film to planned to begin in 2017.
Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Team is a 3DS game that came out in Japan in February of this year, and has yet to be confirmed for a US release.
According to Hollywood Reporter, plot and story for the film are currently unknown. With production beginning in 2017, this will see the film fast-tracked to a release date that is sooner rather than later. The Hollywood Reporter states that Netflix was also in the bidding for the rights.
Toho will handle distribution in Japan, with Universal Pictures handling distribution worldwide.
This news comes after rumors of a film deal surfaced back in April. This deal was likely resurfaced after the immense popularity of the mobile game Pokémon Go.
With the franchise gaining more recent popularity, it makes sense to make deals to cash in on the popular game series. Pokémon has had theatrical films in the past, but this will be the first wide-release theatrical film since the release of Pokémon 4Ever in 2002.
